Anesthesia: Before You Receive Anesthesia

You're scheduled for surgery. Before your surgery, you'll receive medication called anesthesia to keep you from feeling pain during surgery. This sheet explains some important steps you may need to take before you can receive anesthesia or have surgery.

Your doctor may order certain tests before your surgery. These may include:

  • Blood tests to help show how surgery and anesthesia may affect you.

  • Electrocardiography (ECG or EKG) to help show your heart's fitness.

  • Chest x-ray to help show the health of your heart and lungs.

  • Tell your doctor and anesthesia provider if you take any medications, such as aspirin, other over-the-counter drugs, herbs, vitamins, or even illegal drugs (this will be kept confidential).

  • Also mention how much alcohol you drink, whether you smoke, and whether you're allergic to any medications.

  • You may be told to change certain medications you take.

  • Take all medications as directed by your doctor.

Other Preparations

  • Don't eat or drink anything after the midnight before your procedure-unless your doctor says it's okay.

  • Also, arrange to have an adult family member or friend drive you home after the procedure.

  • Be sure to follow all your doctor's instructions, or your procedure may be postponed or rescheduled.
