Dealing with Heartburn
Heartburn is a common condition for many people. Though it is medically known by several names, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and acid reflux disease, heartburn is the rise of stomach acid up to the esophagus.
This digestive disorder is due to many causes, but it is commonly attributed to one’s diet. For instance, caffeine may cause a reverse flow of stomach acid into the esophagus. Thus, one way to avoid heartburn is to minimize drinking coffee. Consuming lots of chocolate also causes heartburn.
Generally, anything that has acid content could cause heartburn. Take citrus fruit, for instance. Once it hits the stomach, its citric acid content tends to rise back up into the esophagus, producing an uncomfortable feeling in the chest. Drinking lots of carbonated drinks can have the same effect. Spicy, fatty or oily foods will also cause symptoms.
When you feel the burn, drink water. Water neutralizes the acid flow. If it’s severe, adding apple cider vinegar would probably do the trick. Take a teaspoon of it and mix it in a glass of water. Keep a daily tab on what you’re eating and lay off the oily, fatty or spicy food for a while. Perhaps you might reduce your intake of coffee and carbonated drinks.
