Dealing with Labor Pains
Pregnancy may be the best thing that can happen to a woman. It is gives her a sense of fulfillment in knowing that she’s carrying a new life in her tummy. But with all the joy comes new and different challenges. Talk about morning sickness, nausea and labor pains — it’s all part of pregnancy.
Mothers know how it feels. For mothers-to-be, contractions and labor pains are normal, and there’s nothing to be alarmed about. However, knowing what to do when these contractions occur may be the part you’ll have to prepare for. Here are a few tidbits about labor pains and how to manage them.
Some women may experience uterine contractions during the second and third trimesters. But these are not the actual labor pains; rather, some people refer to them as “false labor pains.” Ideally, actual labor pains occur only during the third trimester.
At first, labor pains last for about 30 to 70 seconds. As time passes, contractions will increase in intensity and frequency. This happens because the cervix dilates as it prepares a passage for the baby. The next stage of labor pains happens when the baby makes its way through the birth canal.
To prepare for this, it is best to prepare your muscles so that they can handle the stress of labor pains. Accordingly, walking exercises help. Mental relaxation is also important to facilitate an easy delivery. Some relaxation methods involve distracting the mind and diverting it to other thoughts. They also include breathing techniques to effectively manage the pains.
