Unexpected Remedies for Minor Ailments and Other C

Pills and bandages are your household staples when dealing with minor bruises and other ailments. But guess what? You can treat minor conditions using regular items you can find in your kitchen drawers. From sugar to vodka, these bizarre yet effective items can help you with your hiccups, burned tongue, foot odors and many more.

Sugar: Shake your hiccups away with sugar. Professor Andre Dubois, MD, PhD, of Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland says that swallowing a teaspoon of sugar can stop your hiccups.

Ice Cream: Your mouth tissues are very sensitive. Drink that hot coffee without letting it cool down first and you’re sure to find yourself spewing it back out. And that’ll definitely leave your tongue scorched. Soothe those burned tissues with a nice scoop of ice cream or frozen yogurt, says Dr. Richard Antaya.

Apple: An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Well, you can add dentist on this one. According to Jennifer Jabow, DDS, of Park 56 Dental in New York City, apples have natural cleansing properties that dissolve the stains on your teeth.

Pencil: Clenching your teeth and jaws can cause headaches. Fred Sheftell, MD, of the New England Center for Headache in Stamford, Connecticut suggests putting a pencil between your teeth to relax your jaws. But don’t bite on it.

Vodka: Foot odor isn’t cool. Vodka works well for that, except that you’re not drinking it. Use vodka instead on a washcloth to wipe it on your feet. Vodka contains antiseptic properties that kill those odor-causing germs.
