To treat pain, Ms. Scheman noted that medications may be prescribed, adding that benzodiazepines and narcotics, however, may not be the best solutions. The best chronic pain medications that may be used include:
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, naproxen and ibuprofen
- Steroids such as prednisone and dexamethasone
- Anti-seizure drugs
While medications generally target the physical aspect of the pain, therapy is focused on the mind and body. Ms. Scheman noted that physical therapy is an integral part of any program. When done correctly, it can reduce the pain and build tolerance against it.
Other pain management options, which target the physical and emotional aspects of pain, also include:
- Yoga and meditation
- Heat and cold therapy
- Massage and manipulation
- Relaxation techniques, including visual imagery
- TENS therapy (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation)
